When Alex and his wife, Sophie, became parents, they did everything by the book. A new nursery, soft lamps, toys, and, of course, a baby monitor—to be always nearby, even when the baby was sleeping.
The first few months were peaceful. The camera stood in the corner of the room, pointed at the crib. Sophie often watched the feed before bed, and Alex checked his connection from work.
One evening, he was late at the office. It was already past midnight when, out of habit, he opened the baby monitor app on his phone.
At first, everything was as usual—the dim glow of the nightlight, the baby’s light breathing.
But a second later, he noticed movement.
A figure stood in the frame by the crib. A shadow, human-like.
Alex froze, his heart pounding. He turned on the sound—silence. Only the baby’s breathing.
The figure leaned slightly over the crib, as if whispering something. “Sophie…” he whispered into the phone, dialing her number.
His wife didn’t answer.
He called back – silence.
Alex rushed to the car. The drive home took seven minutes, but it felt like an eternity.
When he burst into the house, Sophie was sitting in the bedroom, sleepy and confused.
“What happened?” she asked.
“Where’s the baby? Where have you been?!”
“In the bedroom,” Sophie said, surprised. “He’s sleeping. Everything’s fine.”
Alex ran to the nursery. The baby was indeed sleeping peacefully. The camera still glowed a soft green light.
He opened the recording.
The video had been recording everything since 12:00 AM.
And there it was – that very moment.
The shadow appeared again by the crib. It got closer, tilted – and at that moment the image suddenly shook. The camera lost focus.
And when it leveled out again, a face was visible in the frame. His own.
Alex stood, disbelieving his eyes. In the video, he was standing over the crib, stroking the baby and saying something.
But at the time, he was in the office.
Sophie turned pale as she watched the footage.
“It’s not you,” she whispered. “That person… has no reflection in the glass.”
The next morning, the camera stopped working.
Alex bought a new one. But neither he nor Sophie ever turned on the live feed at night again.
Sometimes, passing by the nursery, he still caught himself thinking that someone was standing inside.
And it seemed as if a quiet whisper spoke from the darkness:
“You yourself asked me to watch him.”
