The owner and the dog saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned in a sewer.
On the day she was walking her dog, Charmaine Kiwi noticed that her dog wasn’t “normal”. He behaved differently, constantly barking. Thus begins the story of George and his beloved Charmaine. Together they saved the life of a newborn baby thrown down the drain.
It all started with a male skunk barking at Georgie as he approached the storm drain. Her mother didn’t know what the dog was trying to explain to her until she heard a sound like a cat’s meow. As she approached, too, he began to realize that it was the voice of a newborn baby coming from the sewers.
The woman turned for help to a man passing by. The latter confirmed that it was the cry of a child.
He opened the sewer pipe with a metal rod and entered the pipes. It was there that he was shocked by the terrifying sight of a very young girl, with her umbilical cord still attached, lying on the ground among the red ants and crying so loudly.
The man quickly wrapped her in a jacket and pulled her out of this terrible environment. Emergency services then intervened to provide resuscitation to the child. She was later named Grace April.
It is thanks to Georgie that Grace found a better destiny and is likely to live a long and happy life. The incident inspired Kiwi to try to rescue abandoned children and give them a second chance at life. So he started a project called Safe Child with the goal of saving thousands of lives.
