If you’ve ever wondered what you can do with old Soviet furniture, take inspiration from this incredible project! A woman named Catherine Gyrla, shared her latest creation—a stunning makeover of a Soviet bollard that was once destined for the landfill.
A Message from Catherine:
Hello! It’s been a while since I last shared one of my remodeling projects. Recently, I finished a piece that I’m really excited about—the transformation of an old Soviet bollard. I found it at a local container site, where discarded furniture is often left behind. At first glance, it wasn’t much to look at, but I saw so much potential in it.

I decided to personalize it according to my tastes and turned it into a functional, stylish piece for my home. The first step was to enhance the facade by gluing wooden laths to give it texture and character. I also replaced the back wall and added a shelf to make it more practical. I removed the old glass, but I’m planning to add a tinted glass shelf in the future for a sleek, modern touch.

The body of the piece was painted with Tikkurila paint, specifically the Euro matt 3 finish I had left over from another project. For the facades, I used a color called “Frost”—a cool, calming shade that perfectly complements the piece’s new design.

I decided to leave the legs in their natural wood state, giving them a rustic feel. To protect the wood, I coated them with Tikkurila impregnation, ensuring they stay well-maintained and preserved. For the door, I opted not to add a handle—partly because I think it looks more harmonious without one, and partly because it opens just fine as it is. However, I made sure to add a button-style handle to the drawer, as I felt that was a necessary touch for functionality.

I’m thrilled with how it turned out, and as you can see from the before-and-after photos, it’s a world of difference! What was once an old, worn-out Soviet bollard is now a beautiful, updated piece that fits perfectly into my home.

This project is proof that with a little creativity and effort, even the most outdated and forgotten items can be turned into something beautiful and functional. If you have old furniture lying around, don’t give up on it just yet—perhaps it’s waiting for its own transformation!
