Recently, a happy incident took place in a wildlife sanctuary in Madrid, where a panda gave birth to twin cubs. The first cub was born at 8:30 a.m. after four hours of contractions. Although professionals were on hand to help, the experienced mother successfully gave birth.
After the tiny, pink cub let out its first screams, the mother gently scooped it up and placed it on her stomach. The second cub came in the afternoon. For the first four months of their lives, babies will be completely dependent on their mothers until they can walk on their own.
The sex of the cubs has yet to be determined, as the results of DNA analysis are awaited. Local veterinarians are getting help from two specialists from the Chengdu China Panda Breeding Center in caring for these rare creatures. The sanctuary has created optimal conditions for the pandas, which is especially important given the challenges they face in increasing their population, both in captivity and in the wild.
Giant pandas, also known as bamboo bears, reach puberty between 4 and 8 years of age. Gestation lasts 90 to 160 days and usually produces one or two cubs weighing 90 to 130 grams.
