For most people, squirrels are just cute backyard visitors—but for Bill Fisher, a 56-year-old from North Dakota, they’ve become unexpected seasonal tenants. And not just anywhere—they’ve picked his Chevy Avalanche as their personal food storage unit… every two years without fail.
Bill first noticed something strange back in 2013 after returning from a short business trip. He popped the hood of his truck and was baffled to find a stash of walnuts stuffed into every possible crevice near the engine. At first, he thought it was a prank—until he looked around and noticed the enormous walnut tree towering over the street between two nearby houses.
Turns out, that tree yields a massive crop every couple of years. And the local squirrel population, naturally, gets busy collecting their share. Instead of storing them in burrows or tree trunks, one particularly resourceful squirrel decided Bill’s truck was the perfect hiding place.
Since then, the tradition has continued. Despite the fact that there are multiple vehicles parked near the same tree, the squirrels only ever target Bill’s Avalanche. He’s tried parking it farther away, but somehow they always find it.
Now it’s become a regular routine. Bill checks under the hood before starting the engine during walnut season. But this fall, the squirrels truly outdid themselves. When he lifted the hood, he found nearly 70 kilograms of walnuts crammed into every corner of the engine bay.
Bill suspects the vehicle’s design plays a role in this unusual behavior. The layout of the truck makes it easy for small animals to climb in from the underside, and there’s more than enough space near the engine for a squirrel’s winter pantry.
He admits it’s a bit of a hassle, but can’t help admiring their dedication—and their incredible memory.
