More than a decade after saying “I do” in Venice, George and Amal Clooney are back in the Italian city that became an unforgettable part of their relationship. The couple arrived by water taxi on September 1 ahead of the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, sharing an affectionate and relaxed moment as they traveled through the famous canals.
Amal, 48, made their entrance particularly stylish. She wore an olive-green set consisting of tailored shorts, a fitted camisole-inspired top and a structured blazer. Oversized dark sunglasses and a compact gray clutch completed her outfit, while her long brunette hair was left loose in the Venetian breeze. George, 65, kept things understated beside her in a navy polo, pale trousers, sunglasses and an off-white belt.
Their visit isn’t purely sentimental. September 2 will bring an important professional moment for George when he receives the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the festival’s opening ceremony. His Jay Kelly co-star Laura Dern is expected to present the tribute. George responded to the recognition with characteristic humor, calling Venice his favorite festival and describing the award as an enormous honor — while joking that receiving it might also be confirmation that he’s getting old.
The destination carries an entirely different significance for the couple away from the red carpet. George and Amal exchanged vows in Venice in September 2014 following a romance that developed remarkably quickly. Their paths had first crossed through a mutual friend at Lake Como in 2013, and George later acknowledged that Amal immediately caught his attention. Their relationship soon became serious, and by April 2014 he had proposed.
