Bruce Campbell, a 64-year-old retired electrical engineer, has always had a passion for thinking outside the box. In his younger years, he purchased a ten-acre plot of forested land near Hillsborough for about $23,000, driven by a clear vision: he wanted to transform an old aircraft into an extraordinary living space.
Campbell had long enjoyed taking apart and rebuilding objects, finding joy in giving them a second life.
Initially, he planned to construct a home using discarded shipping containers. However, after hearing about Joanne Asseri, a hairdresser from Mississippi who had converted a Boeing 727 into her own residence after losing her house to a fire, Campbell’s ambitions shifted.
Inspired by Asseri’s innovative idea, he decided to aim even higher with his own project.
In 1999, Campbell purchased a retired Boeing 727 from Olympic Airways for $100,000. The plane was then shipped all the way from Greece to Oregon, a process that cost an additional $120,000. Despite the hefty expenses, Campbell believed it was a worthwhile investment.
Today, the aircraft’s interior has been carefully adapted for daily living. It still features its original lavatory, a few passenger seats, and even a working washing machine and sink.
Although the spacious plane offers plenty of room, Campbell chooses to live simply. His kitchen setup includes only a microwave and a toaster, and his diet mainly consists of canned foods and cereal.
Living in an airplane might not appeal to everyone, but there’s no denying that Campbell’s achievement is truly remarkable. His bold and inventive project is a testament to following one’s dreams with determination.
