A passer-by discovered the box and opened it to see the puppy inside.
The police officer planned to place her with a foster family until she found a home. But it didn’t work.
Deputy Earl Hanners was outside on an 87-degree day in Atlanta, Georgia when he received a call about an abandoned puppy in a box on the side of the road.
A passer-by discovered the box and opened it to reveal the puppy inside. The stranger left the puppy next to the box, gave him some water and called 911.
Officer Hanners was busy with a car accident at the time, so another officer answered the call first. But Earl himself went to help the puppy as soon as he finished. The puppy was still in the same place next to the box.
Hanners told the officer to cancel the call to animal control and take the puppy to the vet. He named her Bridget and took her home.
Hanners allowed the pup to relax and recover from the heat. While Bridget ate and drank water, he called the vet.
It was then that Earl realized that he could not let her go and decided to keep her.
Bridget isn’t the first dog Earl has rescued: he raises dogs for the local Hounds in Pounds rescue group and currently has eight rescue pugs.
Before introducing Bridget to the others, he made sure she was tested and vaccinated.
And now they are as happy as can be! They all get along very well and form one big friendly family.
No one has been arrested for abandoning Bridget, but at least she’s in a loving home forever. And it’s all thanks to the big heart of Deputy Earl Hanners.
