New details have emerged regarding the death of Jocelyn Wildenstein, the Swiss socialite known for her dramatic transformation, which earned her the nickname “Catwoman.” According to her long-time partner, fashion designer Lloyd Klein, Jocelyn tragically passed away just hours before celebrating New Year’s Eve.
In a heartfelt interview with People magazine, Klein described how the couple had spent a peaceful evening preparing for the New Year. “We had a nice happy hour,” Klein recalled. “We were getting ready to ring in the new year, then decided to rest for a while to freshen up before dressing for the celebration.”
However, tragedy struck when Jocelyn’s underlying health issues took a fatal turn. Klein revealed that Jocelyn had been battling phlebitis, a condition leading to swelling and irritation in the veins of her legs. Unfortunately, this led to a pulmonary embolism, which claimed her life. “Her legs were extremely swollen due to phlebitis, and the blood flow was restricted, causing the brain to lack necessary oxygen,” Klein explained. “When I woke up and called to her to get up, she was cold to the touch and already gone.”
The couple had been together since 2003, and Klein described their relationship as strong and loving, even in the days leading up to her death. “Two days ago, we were at the Ritz having dinner. Before that, we were at Fashion Week for Chanel. Everything seemed perfect,” he said, visibly shaken. “It’s very sad to lay down next to the person you’ve spent 21 years with, eagerly awaiting the festivities, only to find them cold.”
Known for her striking appearance after subjected to several cosmetic enhancements, Jocelyn Wildenstein had become a media sensation, often referred to as “Catwoman” due to her feline-inspired look. Her public notoriety reached a peak in 1999 during her highly widely covered divorce from the wealthy art magnate Alec Wildenstein, who had allegedly encouraged her to undergo numerous surgical procedures.
In a 1998 interview with Vanity Fair, Alec explained that he had tried to warn Jocelyn about the dangers of her obsession with cosmetic procedures, even saying, “She thought she thought she could treat her face like an object to be reupholstered, but the skin doesn’t operate like that.”
Following a prolonged and heated legal conflict, Jocelyn received a staggering $2.5 billion settlement and $100 million annually for the next 13 years. Just two years later, she met Lloyd Klein, who would become her partner for nearly two decades.
While Jocelyn’s appearance was often the focal point of media attention, Klein stressed that she was much more than the surgeries she underwent. In interviews, he described her as a refined and extraordinary woman with a big heart. “She was whimsical, magical, special, and beautiful,” he said in a 2017 interview. “Yes, she was different, but she had qualities that most people didn’t.”
Beyond her cosmetic transformations, Jocelyn was also known for her philanthropic efforts, which included funding water sources and animal clinics in Africa. “She did a lot of incredible things in her life,” Klein noted. “Her achievements were major and impactful, and I don’t think her legacy should be defined solely by her appearance.”
Jocelyn Wildenstein’s death represents the close of a significant period for the socialite who captivated the public’s attention for decades, not only for her appearance but also for her contributions to society.
