For millions of movie fans, Dame Judi Dench will forever be associated with her commanding role as “M,” James Bond’s formidable boss. But long before she joined the famous spy franchise, the British actress had already spent decades building an impressive career on stage and television.
Dench was highly respected in Britain from a young age, although her early appearances in international movies were generally limited to supporting parts. Everything changed when the producers of GoldenEye cast her as “M” in 1995 as part of an effort to modernize the Bond franchise.
The decision proved enormously successful. Beginning with GoldenEye, Dench portrayed the character across seven Bond movies. Her “M” died in the arms of Daniel Craig’s 007 in 2012’s Skyfall, although Dench made one final brief appearance through a recorded video message in Spectre in 2015.
Her international breakthrough extended far beyond Bond. In 1997, Dench portrayed Queen Victoria in Mrs Brown, a performance that brought her widespread Hollywood recognition when she was already in her 60s and earned her first Academy Award nomination.
More Oscar nominations followed for Chocolat in 2000, Iris in 2001, Mrs Henderson Presents in 2005, Notes on a Scandal in 2006 and Philomena in 2013. She returned to the list of nominees once again in 2022 for her supporting performance in Belfast.
Dench took home an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1999 thanks to her remarkably brief performance as Queen Elizabeth I in Shakespeare in Love. Despite appearing on screen for only around eight minutes, her performance was enough to secure one of cinema’s biggest honors.
Over the course of her extraordinary career, Dench has appeared in more than 130 productions. Her acting journey began in British theaters during the late 1950s. In 1957, when she was only in her early 20s, she was already performing in Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
For years, Dench remained determined to continue working despite serious problems with her eyesight caused by macular degeneration, which was diagnosed in 2012. By July 2023, however, she acknowledged that her condition had made working on movie sets increasingly difficult because she could no longer see what was happening or read scripts.
“It’s terrible to be so dependent on people,” Dench said at the time. In May 2024, she indicated that she would no longer return to acting in front of the camera. By the end of 2025, Dench revealed that her eyesight had deteriorated further, saying that she could no longer recognize anyone.
Her unmistakable appearance as the authoritative “M” may be familiar around the world today, but photographs from the beginning of Dench’s career reveal the young actress decades before James Bond and Hollywood transformed her into an international star.
