Kate Beckinsale has returned to social media after a three-week absence, sharing a series of deeply personal posts following intense online discussion about her dramatic weight loss.
The 53-year-old British actress had previously removed all of her posts after facing criticism over her increasingly slim appearance. On her return, Beckinsale first shared a lingerie photo before posting a more concerning video from what appeared to be a hospital bed, with a white bandage wrapped around her head.
She captioned the clip simply “PTSD” and went on to share a lengthy message about people living with post-traumatic stress disorder and the struggles that may remain invisible to those around them.

“I think it is incredibly difficult for many people to understand people with post-traumatic stress disorder who have never been involved in military action,” Beckinsale wrote, explaining that some people have experienced horrors that permanently affected their nervous systems without ever being publicly recognized for what they survived.
She continued by describing how trauma can remain hidden beneath an apparently ordinary life. “Many of these people are very good at masking it: they get up and go to work in the morning, look after children, provide for their families, joke and laugh — they seem like cheerful people. But they cannot sleep normally because of their nightmares.”

Beckinsale added that seemingly ordinary sensations can trigger painful memories. “Smells, sounds, thoughts, feelings can take them back to a place that feels like hell,” she wrote. The actress ended her message by encouraging people to treat each other with greater kindness, particularly those who have experienced tragedy.
Her emotional post comes after several extraordinarily difficult years in her personal life. In July last year, Beckinsale lost her mother, Judy Loe, following a long and difficult battle with cancer.
The actress had already been struggling with the death of her stepfather, who died in 2024 after suffering a massive stroke, while simultaneously dealing with her mother’s illness.

Beckinsale has previously revealed how severely that period of grief and stress affected her physically. Her condition became serious enough that she was hospitalized for more than two months following a breakdown.
Her distress was compounded by the death of her beloved cat, who had been part of her life for 19 years. Beckinsale previously described spending six weeks in hospital because she was repeatedly vomiting blood, saying that stress was physically damaging her esophagus and stomach.
The actress also lives with mast cell activation syndrome, known as MCAS. She was diagnosed 16 years ago with the condition, in which immune-system mast cells can react excessively even to ordinary triggers.

There is no cure for MCAS, and during flare-ups Beckinsale has to follow a highly restricted diet. Her health history has added important context to the continuing public discussion surrounding changes in her appearance.
Now, after weeks away from social media, Beckinsale has returned with a message focused not simply on what people can see in a photograph, but on the struggles that may remain completely invisible behind it.
