PART 2 Maria’s heart began to pound in her chest. She didn’t know what was going on, but the weight of the woman’s presence felt too significant to ignore

Daniel stood frozen, his eyes never leaving her face. “What do you want?” he asked, his voice hoarse, betraying a hint of panic. His fingers tightened around the glass he was holding, but it was clear to everyone watching that he was no longer in control.
The woman’s gaze softened, but there was an unyielding edge to her voice as she spoke. “I’m here to remind you of something you’ve long forgotten,” she said, her eyes flicking toward Maria. “Or perhaps, something you’ve hidden.”
Maria stepped forward, her heart racing. “What are you talking about?” she asked, trying to remain calm but feeling a knot twist in her stomach.
The woman didn’t respond to Maria immediately. Instead, she slowly opened the box she had been holding. Everyone in the room watched as she removed a photo, a faded image of a much younger Daniel. In the picture, he was smiling, holding the hand of the same woman standing before them now. A beautiful woman, much younger than she was now, with a tender expression on her face. And there was something else—something that didn’t make sense.
The woman turned the picture around and showed it to Daniel. His face went white.
Maria glanced at him, then back at the photo. It was clear now—the woman was someone from Daniel’s past. But who?
“I—I don’t understand,” Maria whispered, her voice trembling. “Who is this woman, Daniel? Who was she to you?”
Daniel was speechless, his eyes shifting from the woman to the photo and then back again. Finally, the woman spoke.
“She was his wife,” she said softly, but with undeniable finality. “Before you.”
The room fell completely silent.
Maria’s breath caught in her throat. She stared at Daniel, her mind unable to process the words that had just been spoken. “His wife?” she repeated, the disbelief in her voice palpable. “But… he never told me.”
Daniel finally found his voice, but it trembled. “I didn’t think it mattered anymore, Maria,” he said quickly. “It was so long ago. I didn’t want to bring it up, especially not now…”
But the woman interrupted him, her tone unwavering. “It matters, Daniel. It matters to her,” she said, nodding toward Maria. “She deserves to know who you really are.”
Maria turned to face him, her eyes wide with betrayal. “You kept this from me?” she whispered. “Why didn’t you tell me the truth? We were about to get married, and I didn’t even know this about you.”
Daniel opened his mouth to speak, but no words came out. He looked at the woman and then at Maria, his heart heavy with regret. The woman wasn’t done.
“You’re not the man you claim to be, Daniel. Not to her, and not to me,” the woman said quietly, her eyes filled with sorrow. “I was the one who loved you, the one you promised to protect. But you left me… and you never came back.”
Maria stepped back, her legs shaking as the weight of the truth sank in. She looked down at the picture in the woman’s hands. “How could you hide this from me?” she asked, her voice cracking. “How could you lie to me all this time?”
The woman didn’t wait for an answer. She turned and walked away, leaving Maria and Daniel alone in the middle of the ballroom, the shattered truth hanging between them.
And in that moment, as the guests whispered and the music faded, Maria knew that nothing would ever be the same. The fairy tale she had been living in had come to a crashing halt, and she was left standing in the rubble of her once-perfect world.
She looked at Daniel, her heart aching with disbelief, and realized that the life she had built with him was nothing more than a carefully constructed lie. The man she had thought she knew—the man she was about to marry—was someone she had never truly understood.
As the room buzzed with whispers, Daniel stood motionless, unable to speak. The weight of his past had caught up with him, and it had broken the future he had tried so hard to build.
