Sam Elliott’s mustache has become almost as famous as the actor himself. After six decades in Hollywood, the Landman star is so strongly associated with his signature facial hair that many fans can barely imagine what he looks like without it.
Yet Elliott hasn’t always kept his trademark mustache. At several points throughout his long career, the actor has shaved it completely — and old photographs reveal a surprisingly different side of the Hollywood veteran.
One striking example comes from March 2000, when Elliott attended the Hollywood premiere of High Fidelity with a completely clean-shaven face. Without the mustache, the Big Lebowski actor looked noticeably different, putting more attention on his distinctive eyes, subtle smile and recognizable features.
Fans who have discovered older clean-shaven photographs of Elliott have been equally impressed. One admirer summed up the reaction by saying Elliott looks striking regardless of his appearance, adding that much of his appeal comes from his unmistakable voice as well as his looks.
Another fan agreed that Elliott is handsome either way, but confessed that his signature mustache adds something special and still gives them chills.
Despite the fascination surrounding his facial hair, Elliott himself has never understood why people consider it such a major part of his identity. He first grew a mustache during the late 1960s but has repeatedly shaved it without giving the decision much thought.
“I first grew one in the late ’60s, but I’ve cut it off without hesitation,” he explained in 2018. When asked why he occasionally removes it, Elliott compared the decision to something as ordinary as getting a haircut.
By 2022, he was still amused by the public obsession. “It’s a weird thing. It’s just hair on somebody’s lip,” Elliott said, emphasizing that his career has never depended on maintaining the famous look.
He explained that he feels equally at ease with the look or without it, noting that he has gone without it on several occasions throughout his career.
One of those occasions came in 2015, when Elliott portrayed gangster Avery Markham during the final season of Justified. The character appeared without Elliott’s familiar mustache, but there was no elaborate creative decision behind the change.
Elliott said he was clean-shaven when he landed the role, and there simply wasn’t enough time to grow the kind of mustache he would have wanted for a weekly television series.
Ultimately, he appreciated the clean-shaven appearance because it helped distinguish Avery from characters he had played before. For Elliott, even something as simple as facial hair could subtly transform a performance.
Today, his silver mustache remains one of Hollywood’s most recognizable looks. But the photographs from his clean-shaven years prove that the feature fans associate so strongly with Sam Elliott has never been the only thing responsible for his unmistakable screen presence.
