There are countless genetic conditions that can affect human growth, but not all developmental delays stem from them. Some individuals face entirely different obstacles that halt their physical maturation. This is the case for Shauna Rae, a young woman whose body stopped growing due to unexpected medical complications.

Shauna stands at just 116 centimeters—roughly the height of a five-year-old and below average for an eight-year-old. However, she isn’t a child; she is a 22-year-old woman.
As a baby, Shauna developed normally until, at just 18 months old, she was diagnosed with a severe form of brain cancer. While the treatment successfully saved her life and led to remission, it came with an unexpected consequence.

The chemotherapy affected her pituitary gland, the part of the brain responsible for regulating growth. As a result, her body essentially stopped developing after she turned eight.
Shauna faces numerous struggles due to her unique condition. Finding clothes that fit is a daily frustration—since adult-sized clothing isn’t designed for her stature, she has no choice but to shop in children’s sections.
Beyond clothing, societal perceptions pose even greater obstacles. Because of her appearance, people rarely recognize her as an adult. She is often denied entry to bars, and tattoo parlors insist on parental consent before allowing her to get inked. However, the biggest challenge she faces is in her personal life.

Dating is particularly difficult for Shauna. Many of her peers struggle to see her as an adult, which makes forming romantic connections nearly impossible. She hopes that blind dates may provide a way for potential partners to look beyond her appearance and get to know her as a person.
Shauna’s story has captured the attention of many, and TLC announced a documentary, I Am Shauna Rae, dedicated to her life and struggles. She hopes that by sharing her experience, people will become more understanding and accepting.
Set to premiere in January 2022, the documentary promises to shed light on the unique challenges she faces daily—challenges that most people would never imagine. Many are eager to watch and gain insight into what it truly means to live as an adult in a child’s bod.
