Not all people pay attention to the shape when designing and constructing a house. Even some architects don’t consider that a core part. It is actually much more important to meet the client’s requirements.
But in the countries in northern Europe they act completely differently. They first of all decide on the shape of the house, and only then think about the rest. And in these countries it is almost impossible to find square private residential buildings.
Let’s consider standard housing in Norway, Finland, and Sweden. The houses there are rectangular or have complex shapes. It seems that the inhabitants here know some secret.
The first reason: a square is a simple figure. Inside, one gets the impression that everything is always at hand, but gradually becomes cramped and limited. In a rectangular building there is an effect of the length of space and movement.
The reason 2 – it is zoning possibilities. Thus, bedrooms can be separated from noisy household spaces, and children’s rooms can be separated from adults.
The corridor can be organized not at the expense of the central living area. The fourth reason is quite obvious too. The facade of a rectangular house and all its living rooms can be arranged taking into account the cardinal directions.
In northern countries, where it is not really sunny, it is very important to place all rooms on the warm side.
