The beloved mountain gorilla who garnered worldwide attention after taking a viral selfie with an anti-poaching ranger has died at the age of 14. The magnificent creature died in the arms of the man who saved her as an infant. Two friends for life a heartbreaking photo posted to Instagram by Virunga National Park shows the bond for the last time. Before taking his last breath, Ndakasi can be seen resting his head on the chest of his guardian and protector, André Bauma. After posing for selfies, the two went viral a few years ago.
“It is with heartfelt sadness that Virunga announces the passing of her beloved orphaned mountain gorilla, Ndakasi,” read the touching words. On the 26th, after a long illness, during which her condition deteriorated sharply.
Ndakasi, like all other primates in Virunga National Park in the Congo, was a symbol of hope and determination.
When Ndakasi was two months old, she was brought to the center of Senkwekwe in Viruga Park. She was rescued by park rangers after she lost her mother to poaching at the time.
The Viruga mountain gorilla is an endangered species that is protected by over 600 dedicated rangers who are always willing to risk their lives to protect these gentle giants. The beautiful friendship between Ndakasi and André demonstrates the Rangers’ deep and unique bond with these gentle giants.
