Black flamingos stands out from the crowd with its plumage. But, as it turned out, this black has a special genetic disease called melanism. Due to the emergency amount of melanin, the bird is darker than its counterparts.
Flamingo rarely inherits this genetic disease. More often it can be found in hawks and ducks.
Dark feathers are a plus for many birds. They help them hide from stronger predators. In this case, the feathers of rare flamingos are unhealthy. They can be easily broken.
In addition, the color makes it difficult to attract other partners during reproduction.
