A Princess Somali Giraffe was a great new addition to the Memphis Zoo.😍🦒
The Memphis Zoo, founded in 1906, currently houses about 3,500 animals from 500 different species. The zoo recently celebrated the birth of a Somali giraffe cub, who is now the zoo’s youngest princess.
A giraffe named Wandy gave birth to a calf named Milele on June 7, much to the delight of the staff, who were looking forward to her arrival. The name Milele, which means “forever”, was chosen in honor of the long wait for her birth.
Mother and calf were examined and found to be healthy. Milele has a confident and cheeky personality and enjoys walking around her mother and making her presence known.
Having met her father, sister, and brother, Milele was glad to see other giraffes. Somali giraffes are currently endangered, so they are kept in reserves and zoos to protect their population. Breeding programs are in action to help restore their population and eventually return them to wildlife.
Somali giraffes are the tallest land animals, growing up to 18 feet. Their elegant patterns and gentle movements make them a magnificent sight.
