The sea was calm, the sun bright, and the wind gentle when a group of fishermen set out on their boat, hoping for a good catch of crab. They navigated carefully between chunks of floating ice, keeping an eye on the weather and the shifting sea.
One of them, stationed on lookout, suddenly spotted something unusual on top of a small iceberg drifting nearby. At first glance, it seemed like it could be a seal, but as they got closer it became clear this was no seal at all. Standing on four legs, trembling and exhausted, was a small Arctic fox.
The men realized the animal must have ended up stranded after chasing food onto a piece of ice that broke away. Out there, surrounded by freezing water, it stood no chance of surviving the night. Without hesitation, the crew decided they had to act quickly to save it.
They carefully nudged the ice with their boat to block the fox’s escape, then used a fishing net to bring the frightened creature onboard. Though it struggled at first, exhaustion soon took over. The men wrapped it in a dry towel, made a small bed of wood shavings to help absorb moisture, and kept watch as the fox drifted off into a deep sleep for several hours.
When it woke, they offered food and comfort until they finally returned to shore. There, they released the fox onto safe ground near the wilderness, watching it dart away into freedom. The fishermen were left with a sense of joy — not because of their catch, but because they had given a stranded animal another chance at life.
