I just stopped drinking one thing — and lost 63 kilograms”: how a British woman got her life back

A woman from the United Kingdom once weighed over 130 kilograms and believed she would never be able to change her life. But everything turned around when she made one simple — yet life-changing — decision: to give up just one drink.
Today, the 50-year-old woman glows with happiness, feels healthy, and shares her story to inspire others.
Several years ago, she went to the doctor for a routine check-up related to a women’s health issue. What seemed like a simple examination ended in tragedy — she developed septic shock. She nearly died, underwent three major surgeries, and faced long months of recovery.

“I was terrified I wouldn’t wake up. My body was shutting down. I had fever, weakness, nausea… I thought I wouldn’t make it,” she recalls.

When her health finally began to improve, a new struggle began — uncontrollable hunger. Within a year, her weight climbed to 136 kilograms.

“Every evening I had the same ritual — a bottle of wine and a couple of bags of crisps. That was how I coped with stress, not realizing how big I was getting,” she says.

The turning point came at a New Year’s Eve party in 2021. Surrounded by her slim friends, she suddenly felt completely out of place. That night, she realized: if I don’t change something, I’ll never be happy.
By February 2022, doctors told her she needed to lose weight before undergoing hernia surgery. She could have taken the easier route — gastric bypass surgery — but she refused.

“I told myself: I’ll do it on my own. No surgery. No pills,” she remembers.

She completely changed her lifestyle — started cooking simple, healthy meals, joined a gym, and took up aqua fitness. But the main step was giving up alcohol for good.

“Before, I couldn’t imagine an evening without a glass of wine. Now my treat is a cup of herbal tea,” she laughs.

Over two years, her weight dropped from 136 to 72 kilograms. Today, she says she has regained not only her figure — but also her strength and confidence.

“I finally feel like myself again. I used to hide behind food and bottles. Now I’m just living.”
