Princess Charlotte is following in her mother Kate Middleton’s footsteps by discovering a passion for music and learning to play the piano.
The 41-year-old Princess of Wales expressed her enthusiasm for her daughter’s musical abilities during her visit to the Royal Variety Performance held at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Thursday night.
In a conversation with the famous pianist Lang Lang, who had just performed with a 13-year-old blind girl named Lucy, Kate shared that her eight-year-old daughter has recently started piano lessons.
Lang Lang recounted their conversation to Hello! Magazine, saying, “We talked about Charlotte. Her Royal Highness mentioned Charlotte’s piano playing, and I’m sure she’s doing well. She told me that she encouraged Charlotte by saying, ‘If you practice a lot, you can be like him.’”
Impressed, Lang Lang added, “I was blown away. I’m sure she’ll excel at playing the piano. It sounds like she’s dedicated to practicing.”
For Kate, Charlotte’s new musical endeavor is likely a source of joy, as the mother of three has her own musical background as an avid pianist.
Kate’s love for music began in her childhood, where she learned to play the piano and flute and participated in the school choir, achieving Grade Three in piano.
She displayed her musical skills for the first time at the Together at Christmas concert in 2021, where she shared the stage with singer Tom Walker. “It was definitely a unique experience,” Walker reflected. “She truly excelled in her performance; stepping behind a piano to play with a group of unfamiliar musicians is no simple task, but she made it look easy.”
Kate’s former piano teacher, Daniel Nicholls, also spoke fondly of her as a student, recalling in a 2012 interview with the Evening Standard, “She was a lovely student—such a delight to teach.”
Now, with Charlotte picking up the piano, it seems that musical talent runs in the family.
