My daughter had been complaining about poor sleep. I thought it was just a childish fantasy, but when I set up a camera in her room, I soon realized, with horror, why her bed felt so cramped at night

For the past few weeks, my daughter had been constantly complaining that she wasn’t sleeping well and that her bed was becoming too small for her. At first, I thought it was just a child’s imagination and didn’t pay much attention to her words.
Every evening, the routine was the same. I’d tuck Emily into bed, adjust her blanket, read a few pages from her favorite book, and kiss her on the forehead before turning off the light. She had long been accustomed to sleeping alone in her room, and this had never been an issue.
For many weeks, this worked perfectly.
But one morning, Emily quietly came into the kitchen while I was preparing breakfast. She was still half-asleep, wearing socks with a tiny drop of toothpaste on the corner of her mouth. She hugged me around the waist and softly said she hadn’t slept well.
I asked her what had happened, thinking she had just had a nightmare.
She thought for a moment and then said something strange.
— Mommy, my bed is smaller now.
I actually laughed at first and told her that her bed was so big that another person could easily fit in it.
But she shook her head and seriously said that at night, it felt too cramped for her.
At that point, I didn’t think much of it because kids sometimes say odd things. However, the next day, she said the same thing. And again the day after.
Sometimes she mentioned waking up constantly during the night. Other times, she complained about feeling like something was pushing her away in her sleep. One evening, she suddenly asked me something that made a cold chill run through me.
She quietly asked if I had come into her room at night.
I knelt in front of her and calmly said no. I explained that I slept next to Daddy at night and didn’t go anywhere.
She paused for a moment and then quietly added that sometimes it felt like someone was lying next to her.
I quickly smiled and told her it was just a dream. But even as I said that, I felt uneasy myself.
That evening, I told my husband about it. He had just returned from a long shift at the hospital, tired and irritated, and he just brushed it off. He said that kids often make up such things and that our house was perfectly safe.
I didn’t argue, but my fear for my daughter’s safety didn’t go away.
The next day, I bought a small surveillance camera and discreetly installed it in the corner of Emily’s room. The camera was almost invisible and worked silently.
The first night, everything seemed completely normal.
The recording showed only my daughter, peacefully sleeping in the middle of her bed. She breathed quietly, occasionally shifting in her sleep, and nothing out of the ordinary happened. I even began to think that maybe all of this had been just a product of her imagination.
But one night, I woke up around 2 AM and went to the kitchen to get some water. Out of habit, I opened the camera app on my phone, just to take a quick look at the screen.
And in that moment, my heart seemed to stop.
Because the bed was no longer empty.
And in that instant, I realized why my daughter had been feeling cramped all this time. 😲😱
There was someone lying next to Emily.
I stared at the screen for a few seconds, trying to understand what was happening. The camera showed an adult lying next to my daughter, quietly resting beside her.
It was my mother-in-law. She was lying next to Emily, tucked under the edge of the blanket.
And in that moment, I immediately remembered our old argument.
Several months ago, we had a big fight because I decided that Emily should sleep in her own room. My mother-in-law had practically bombarded me with accusations.
She said I was a bad mother, that small children shouldn’t sleep alone, that they could get scared at night, and something could happen to them.
I calmly but firmly told her that my daughter should have her own room. She was very hurt by that. And now I understood what had been happening.
When everyone in the house had fallen asleep, she would quietly get up at night, go to Emily’s room, and lie next to her until morning. She was convinced she was doing the right thing, helping the child, without thinking for a second that she was the one frightening her and making her feel uncomfortable.
The next morning, we had a very serious conversation. I didn’t remove the camera.
And my mother-in-law no longer has any right to interfere in how I raise my daughter.
