When that day finally arrived, the man was extremely satisfied.
Brian Myers’ life was saved by a dog he rescued a few months ago. And also, their meeting after Myers was released from the medical facility was much more psychological than the one where they first met.
Myers rescued his 6-year-old German Shepherd named Sadie after she was turned in at the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Shelter wearing a new jacket. The shelter staff had a hard time finding Sadie because she was nervous around the boys and also defensive.
“She was a little lonely when she first came in and she wasn’t sure what was going on”, Heather Centrella, head of the front office at the Ramapo-Bergen Animal Shelter, told The Dodo. “She’s become a bit withdrawn at the shelter, so we knew she’d need a knowledgeable residence with someone to keep your horses”.
It took only half an hour for Myers to determine that he intended to bring Sadie home after their meeting.
The problems she was expected to have with men disappeared.
“She was digging into my car and we formed a strong bond. I was able to work through the problems she had and committed to offering her the place and love she deserved”, Myers said in a Facebook post.
“She kept licking me and crying, so I reached out with my right hand to pet her and then grabbed her by the collar,” Myers told The Washington Post.
Myers had no idea that in a few months Sadie would be responsible for saving him.
Both were enjoying a shared night at the house when Myers suddenly had a stroke.
He had no sensation in his left side, and between the bed and the wall.
“It was really scary – I couldn’t get up and didn’t really realize at the time that I had a stroke”, Myers said. “My cell phone was on a cabinet about 15 feet away from me, but I couldn’t reach it”.
Sadie immediately went into action and licked her dad’s face to try and restore it.
The dog refused to leave him.
She kept calling for help in the hope that the neighbors would hear her. Myers stepped in to order her a collar and was also shocked by what happened next.
After that, Sadie used all her stamina to drag her father around the space to get him closer to his phone.
“She was not trained as a service pet, but she was concerned about what was happening, and can also report that I had problems,” he said. “I don’t know exactly how she did it, but she knew”.
Myers was able to get through to his phone and call for help. Medical officials at the hospital told Myers that Sadie was most likely responsible for saving his life.
Sadie stayed with the Mayer family while her father hung around at the medical center and then rehab.
“They’re on FaceTime, which he says she’s a little overwhelmed by because she wants to get through to her dad and is also crying”, Centrella said. “However, he reassures her that he is doing his best to get a home for her as soon as possible so they can be reunited”
When that day finally arrived, he was extremely satisfied.
Myers burst into tears as Sadie jumped into his arms and covered his face in kisses as well.
“It was the best choice I’ve ever made to adopt her”, Myers said. “I really feel like it was meant to be”.
