Rosa and Josefa Blažek were born on January 20, 1878, in Bohemia, and from the very beginning, their lives were anything but ordinary.
The sisters were conjoined at the pelvis, bound together not just by family ties, but physically as well.
Despite the challenges, Rosa and Josefa learned to play music, entertained crowds, and traveled across Europe performing.
During a tour in France in 1906, Rosa’s life changed when she fell in love with a young officer named Franz. Their bond grew stronger over time.
At first, Josefa struggled to accept her sister’s new relationship. Feeling like an outsider, she battled loneliness, but eventually came to terms with Rosa’s right to find happiness.
Their relationship blossomed, and in 1909, news broke across France: one of the famous conjoined sisters was expecting a child.
Since Rosa was the one in love, everyone assumed she was carrying the baby. Yet because of their physical connection, Josefa experienced the pregnancy alongside her—from morning sickness to the pains of labor.
On April 16, 1910, Rosa gave birth to a healthy baby boy, named Franz after his father. In a touching twist, both sisters produced milk and together nurtured and cared for the child.
Soon after, the sisters returned to the stage with their son. Their act, called “Two Mothers – One Heart,” moved audiences to tears and admiration.
Tragedy struck in 1922 when Josefa became gravely ill. Doctors offered to surgically separate them in an attempt to save Rosa, but she refused, saying, “We came into this world together and we will leave it together.”
True to her word, the sisters passed away on the same day, only 12 minutes apart.
Their story remains a testament to love, loyalty, and an unbreakable bond.
