Halle Berry and her ex-husband, Olivier Martinez, are locked in a bitter custody battle over their 10-year-old son, Maceo. The 58-year-old actress and her French ex-spouse, also 58, are fighting for custody, and in the midst of it all, Martinez has become nearly unrecognizable.
The former couple first crossed paths on the set of Dark Tide in South Africa in 2010. After a whirlwind romance, they became engaged in 2012 and tied the knot on July 13, 2013. However, their marriage lasted just three years, and despite separating in 2016, their legal divorce was not finalized until 2023. Even with the official split behind them, the custody dispute over their son continues to be contentious.
Recently, Martinez was spotted in Los Angeles, and those familiar with his once-dashing red carpet appearances barely recognized him. He appeared much thinner, with short-cropped gray hair replacing his once-lush brown locks. Sporting a casual and somewhat disheveled look, he wore a tie-dye T-shirt, an Adidas jacket, cargo pants in safety green, and old sneakers, hiding his face behind gold-rimmed aviator sunglasses.
Since his divorce from the Oscar-winning actress, Martinez’s acting career has faltered, but he has secured significant financial support from Berry, including a generous monthly alimony. According to reports, the actor has been accused by Berry of refusing to participate in joint therapy sessions regarding Maceo’s upbringing, which she had paid $200,000 for. Additionally, she claims to have spent another $200,000 on legal fees for their ongoing dispute, even covering $80,000 of his costs. Berry insists that Martinez is relying on her financial support, forcing her to work more to cover these expenses.
The Catwoman star is now pursuing full custody of their son, alleging that Martinez has been uncooperative in making decisions for Maceo’s well-being. In court documents, Berry expressed frustration over her ex-husband’s refusal to collaborate. “I’ve done everything I can to work with Olivier, to include him in decisions for Maceo,” the actress wrote. “But he’s been resistant and uncompromising on key issues related to our son.”
The ongoing conflict between the two has been exacerbated by Berry’s new relationship with singer and producer Van Hunt. Berry believes that Martinez’s hostility intensified after she began dating Hunt. “I’m truly sorry that we’re at odds,” she said in messages revealed during the custody case. “I had hoped we could do better for Maceo, like we used to. But ever since I got with Van, things have just gotten worse. You won’t even try anymore.”
Martinez reportedly responded with a sharp retort, accusing Berry of being manipulative. “The only way to work together is your way. You’ve always played dirty, putting Maceo second. Karma’s coming for you, don’t worry,” he wrote.
Adding to the emotional strain, Berry claims that their son’s struggles in school—he has been diagnosed with ADHD and mild dyslexia—are being ignored by Martinez. She believes this neglect demonstrates that he is unfit for custody. The court documents, as reported by the Daily Mail, also reveal Berry’s concerns about how the ongoing battle is affecting their son’s education.
In her legal filings, Berry accuses Martinez of dragging out the custody case to extract more money from her. Martinez, however, has countered by alleging that Berry has refused to assist with his legal fees, despite her substantial income from recent projects. The former James Bond actress, now a successful producer, reportedly earns millions, which Martinez argues should be factored into their financial arrangements.
As the custody battle continues, both parents remain at odds, with their son Maceo caught in the middle.
