Safina Namukwaya, a woman from Uganda, has captured hearts across the globe after giving birth to twins at the age of 70. Now, just weeks after bringing her newborn son and daughter home, she’s proudly showing them off for the first time.
The joyful moment happened on November 29 at a fertility hospital in Kampala, where Safina delivered a boy and a girl by C-section. Doctors described both babies as healthy and thriving, each weighing around 2.2 kilograms when they were discharged in early January.
Dr. Edward Tamale, one of the lead specialists, described Safina as a devoted and joyful mother who can’t take her eyes off her little ones. “She’s constantly smiling and completely in love with them,” he shared.
The twins have been lovingly named Shakira Babiyre Nabagala and Kato Shafiq Kangave, or simply Babiyre and Kato. Their birth has even earned their parents new village titles—Safina is now affectionately called Nalongo (mother of twins), and her husband, Salongo (father of twins).
Doctors continue to be amazed by Safina’s health. Despite her age, she has no high blood pressure, no diabetes, and maintains good overall wellness. “She’s strong, healthy, and glowing with happiness,” said the medical team. “And if she ever wants to try again, we’ll be ready to help her.”
Paediatrician Gloria Lunyolo echoed the sentiment, calling the newborns “miracle babies.” She confirmed they are feeding well with both formula and breast milk and are adjusting beautifully to life at home.
Just two days after giving birth, Safina expressed deep gratitude, saying, “Some may say 70 is too old, but I believe God chose this moment for me. His power has no limits.”
Already a mother to a three-year-old daughter, Safina admits she doesn’t do it all alone. “I get help with the housework and the children, especially because of my age,” she said.
Safina became pregnant through IVF, using donor eggs and her husband’s sperm—a process that made this incredible chapter of her life possible.
