Céline Dion’s long-awaited return to the concert stage became emotional almost immediately. The 58-year-old superstar performed her first complete concert in more than six years on Saturday, September 12, marking a major milestone after health struggles forced her to step away from live performances.
Dion launched the first night of her 26-show residency at Plenitude Arena in Nanterre, France, with her 1998 song On Ne Change Pas. But only moments into the performance, emotion took over. She paused, wiped tears from her face and placed a hand over her heart as the audience welcomed her back.
After collecting herself, Dion finished the song and continued with Destin. She later addressed the audience in French and English, thanking fans who had traveled from around the world and acknowledging just how extraordinary it felt to finally be together again.
“I made a promise to come back, to be back on stage,” she told the crowd. “So here I am, singing for you and singing for me, singing life!” Dion then thanked her supporters for their patience before introducing Because You Loved Me, giving the 1996 hit an especially poignant meaning on the night.
Dion’s previous full concert took place in March 2020. The pandemic initially interrupted her touring schedule, but her planned return was later derailed after she revealed in 2022 that she had been diagnosed with stiff-person syndrome, a rare progressive neurological and autoimmune disorder that can cause severe muscle stiffness, spasms and mobility difficulties.

Preparing for her return has required extensive work. Dion has said her regimen has included medication, physical and vocal therapy and immunotherapy, while Pilates three times a week and ballet classes have helped her prepare physically for the demands of performing a complete concert again.

For Dion, however, returning was about far more than simply singing onstage again. She had previously spoken about wanting to give something back to the fans she had missed during her long absence — and judging by the tears that arrived within seconds of her opening song, the reunion meant just as much to her.
