A heartwarming story has emerged from the UK, where one woman’s decision to foster a litter of abandoned kittens led to an incredible display of love and loyalty from an unlikely source—her dog.

Rachel, an employee at the Battersea Dogs & Cats Home, was heartbroken when a group of newborn kittens was found abandoned near a busy motorway. Knowing how hard it is for such tiny animals to survive in a shelter environment, she brought them home to give them a better chance.

Waiting at home was Bertie, her black Labrador—himself a former shelter animal with a calm and gentle soul. Rachel didn’t know how he’d react to the fragile newcomers, but she was in for a surprise.

Instead of being confused or territorial, Bertie embraced his new role with open paws. He instantly took the kittens under his wing—or rather, his paw—and began acting like a protective and loving father.

While Rachel handled the feedings and medical care, Bertie played, supervised, and patiently taught the kittens how to navigate their tiny world. He’d even help guide them to their litter box and keep them clean, licking them gently the way a mother cat would.

For two full months, the pair worked as a team, raising the kittens and preparing them for the next stage of life. As the babies grew, so did their confidence and personalities. By the time they were ready to return to the shelter, they were healthy, playful, and well-socialized—thanks in large part to their devoted canine “dad.”

Though saying goodbye was bittersweet, especially for Bertie, the pair took comfort in knowing all seven kittens were later adopted into loving homes.
