Susan Sarandon is just weeks away from turning 80, but the Hollywood legend had no trouble commanding attention during her latest appearance at the Venice Film Festival.
The 79-year-old actress arrived for the world premiere of her new movie The Echo Chamber, in which she stars alongside Alicia Vikander and Italian actor Luca Marinelli. While many celebrities have embraced dramatic cutouts and revealing gowns in Venice, Sarandon opted for something considerably more understated.
The Oscar winner stepped onto the red carpet in a simple yet elegant black floor-length dress. The fitted upper section left her shoulders exposed before the design widened from the hips and fell in soft folds toward the ground.
Sarandon wore her shoulder-length dark hair loose and added several bold details to the otherwise minimalist ensemble. Bright red lipstick provided a dramatic splash of color, while a chunky statement chain necklace gave the look an edgier finish. She initially also wore dark sunglasses as she stopped to sign autographs for waiting fans.
Her co-star Alicia Vikander, 37, took a very different approach, appearing in a turquoise ruffled gown with a high leg slit. Vikander was joined in Venice by her husband, Michael Fassbender.
Sarandon also used the high-profile appearance to make a political statement. A small pin attached to the upper-left side of her dress featured a dove carrying a flower in its beak, representing Artists4Ceasefire, an organization advocating for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The Venice appearance comes shortly before another major milestone for Sarandon. The actress will celebrate her 80th birthday on October 4.
Her extraordinary screen career stretches back decades. Sarandon scored an early breakthrough in 1975 with cult classic The Rocky Horror Picture Show, appearing alongside the late Tim Curry.
She reached another level of international fame with the 1991 classic Thelma & Louise, starring opposite Geena Davis. Several years later, her acclaimed performance in Dead Man Walking earned Sarandon the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1996.
Now, nearly 30 years after that Oscar victory and approaching her eighth decade, Sarandon is still appearing in major films — and proving on the Venice red carpet that she doesn’t need an extravagant look to stand out.
