Britney Spears can now enjoy a break from paying her ex-husband Kevin Federline, as their youngest son just turned 18. Over the years, the pop star has shelled out over $5 million in child support. Federline had repeatedly pushed the courts to increase these payments, arguing that Britney’s lavish lifestyle didn’t match the simpler life he and their sons led, even claiming the boys had to share a small room in a modest home.
Federline, while not notorious like some infamous celebrities, has never been widely admired. His rise to fame came in 2004, when he quickly transitioned from being Britney’s backup dancer to her husband. Their whirlwind romance shocked many, especially when it was revealed that Federline already had a pregnant girlfriend and another child. Their marriage only lasted two years, during which Britney gave birth to two sons before a very public divorce.
Following their split, Britney faced personal struggles, including a mental health crisis, a stint in a psychiatric facility, and losing custody of her sons to Federline. She was only granted visitation rights and ordered to pay $20,000 a month in child support. Despite several attempts to make a name for himself—dabbling in singing, acting, wrestling, and more—Federline never gained widespread success and was often met with negative public sentiment.
However, he did capitalize on his fleeting fame, securing modeling gigs and earning $1 million from appearances at Las Vegas parties. But once the media frenzy surrounding Britney’s breakdown died down, so did interest in Federline. He remarried, had two more children, and became a DJ, though his career never flourished. In 2017, he successfully petitioned the court to double his child support, raising his payments from $240,000 to $480,000 annually, claiming poor health and low earnings as a DJ.
Federline now lives in Hawaii with his wife, a volleyball coach, and their children, renting a beachfront home for $14,000 a month. In his rare public comments, he frequently portrays himself as a victim of his relationship with Britney, blaming their marriage for his health issues, depression, and damaged public image. He even turned his weight gain into profit by participating in reality shows focused on losing weight.
Despite enjoying extravagant vacations with their mother, Britney’s sons have publicly expressed a negative view of her. Leaked videos have shown them being disrespectful, and after Britney was released from her father’s conservatorship in 2021, they cut ties with her, citing concerns about her mental health. They’ve stated they hope to reconnect once she seeks proper treatment.
In response, Britney took to social media, questioning whether her sons’ disapproval was tied to the fact that, in two years, the payments to their father would end. She wrote, “Do you guys want me to get better so I can keep paying your dad 40k a month?”
Recently, however, the boys have started to reconnect with Britney. She hopes to rebuild their relationship, vowing to shower them with gifts that, in her words, “their father could never afford.”
