Long before Prince Harry married Meghan Markle, another woman held a special place in his life. Chelsy Davy, the Zimbabwean businesswoman who dated the royal for several years, has now shared revealing reflections on her younger years — and her words offer a fascinating perspective on why their relationship may never have been destined for marriage.
Harry and Chelsy dated on and off between 2004 and 2009, making theirs his longest relationship before he married Meghan in 2018. Their romance attracted enormous public attention, and many royal watchers once wondered whether Chelsy might eventually become a member of the British royal family.

But according to her recent reflections, settling down was the last thing on her mind during those years. Writing on the website of her jewelry business, Aya, Chelsy admitted that throughout her twenties and even into her thirties, she valued independence, travel and excitement far more than commitment.

“Commitment wasn’t exactly my strong suit,” she confessed. “If I’m completely honest, the only thing I was committed to was having fun.” She explained that she was constantly searching for the next trip, the next adventure and new people to meet, with little desire to establish a permanent routine.
Chelsy also made it clear that she wasn’t prepared to change her lifestyle for someone else. She didn’t expect a partner to rearrange their plans around her, and she certainly didn’t want anyone expecting her to sacrifice her own freedom in return. Although she didn’t mention Harry directly, her words help explain why a future shaped by royal duties and expectations may not have appealed to her.

The intense attention surrounding their relationship also played a role in its ending, according to Harry. During his legal battle with the British press, he argued that intrusive media coverage contributed to Chelsy’s decision that royal life wasn’t for her. Royal commentators have similarly suggested that she understood early on how restrictive life within the monarchy could become.
For years afterward, Chelsy continued enjoying the independent lifestyle she had always wanted. But everything began changing when the COVID-19 pandemic brought international travel and social adventures to a sudden halt. Around that time, at the age of 35, she met Sam Cutmore-Scott, the man who would eventually become her husband.
“Covid happened. Travel stopped. The adventures stopped. And somewhere in amongst all of that, I met Sam,” she recalled. For the first time, the woman who had spent years avoiding commitment began imagining a different future — one that included marriage, stability and children.
Chelsy and Sam married in 2022 after welcoming their first child, Leo. They later expanded their family with two more children, Chloe and Finn. Motherhood brought enormous changes to the freedom she had once protected so fiercely, but Chelsy has made it clear that she was finally ready to embrace that new chapter.
“I sometimes say my children saved me from myself,” she admitted, reflecting on her adventurous younger years. Although she had enjoyed an extraordinary amount of freedom and excitement, she recognized that she probably couldn’t have continued living that way forever.

Her present life is very different from the one she might have experienced as Prince Harry’s wife. Rather than navigating royal obligations and constant public scrutiny, Chelsy has built a family and business on her own terms. One person close to her even suggested in 2025 that ending her relationship with Harry may have been the best thing that happened to her.
Despite their breakup, there appears to be no lasting bitterness between the former couple. Chelsy attended Harry and Meghan’s wedding in 2018, and she previously expressed confidence that she and Harry would always remain good friends.
Now, years after their highly publicized romance ended, Chelsy’s reflections reveal how dramatically her priorities have changed. She eventually found the marriage and family life she once avoided — just at a different time, with a different man, and far away from the royal spotlight.
