The project to transform an old barn into a tiny home was especially important because the barn was not just a structure, but a treasured inheritance from Michael’s grandparents. The Krebs family had been living in a rented home for 7 years and they decided to turn an old barn into their dream home until they saved up enough resources to renovate and move into their main home. This project was not only a way to find temporary housing, but also a step towards restoring and preserving a family heritage.
The barn, built in the 1980s, presented many challenges. With peeling paint, missing plumbing and an inadequate electrical system, the 280-square-foot structure required a complete overhaul. Taking her passion for tiny houses boldly, Katie decided that an old barn had great potential to make her long-awaited dream come true. Despite limited financial resources, the couple bravely took on the bulk of the renovation work. They even crafted the materials themselves on site, including recycling old lumber and using an old barn door.
The couple, despite all the obstacles, kept theirs, they added new windows, and also repainted the roof and external walls with fresh paints. Efficient use of materials allowed them to save money.
To create separate rooms in an old barn, the family had to overcome several difficulties. It was especially important to develop a floor plan to transform the open space into a living room with separate areas for the bedroom and bathroom. To add personality and fulfill the dream of turning an old barn into a cozy home, the Krebs family decided to build an 8-foot porch.
The veranda is a great place for outdoor meetings and for enjoying the sunset in the evening. Despite the challenges posed by the pandemic, the family managed to avoid major supply chain problems by cleverly using existing materials.
The fully completed tiny house, with three cozy rooms filled with rustic classic furniture, was the epitome of creativity for the whole family. Particularly notable is the kitchen, which is Katie’s favorite corner and reflects her desire to create a cozy space.

Even despite criticism on social media, Katie maintains that this is just a temporary situation. The family enjoys a beautiful home that allows their daughters to freely explore the nature that surrounds their home.
